This construction was built at around the start of 2014, when we were starting a few first projects. The whole process was a collaboration between AD+ and a young architect whose land plot was at the outskirt of Saigon.

With limited financial resource – about 270 million VND for 75 square meters of construction site – the house was planned to have only one floor to minimize the total area. At the same time, the design combined communal spaces in a successive manner, wiping out the corridors to solve issues concerning area and financial resources.

The house intertwined ‘solid’ volumes (the spaces in daily use) with ‘hollow’ volumes (the yard, water, buffer zones), creating a “Caro” (checkered) pattern on the whole. This design not only helped to utilize the natural light from the roof, but also created spaces with 3 sides in contact with nature despite limited area.

The roof with steel frame was made to be solid and hollow due to the program below, combined with the changes in material and level on the floor to define spaces. These areas did not need to have partition wall but were separated by plant or water.

The alternation of solid and hollow was also presented on the façade of the building. The revolving door system made of iron bars provided an airy view to the little front yard, while the wood panel door took part in keeping the privacy for inhabitants. Therefore, the dialogue between interior and exterior was maintained.
